Vasectomy 101
So, when I returned from Yellowstone I had a big pile of mail to sort through. As I went through it, This was one of the items I opened...

Now you might be thinking yeah so, he had a vasectomy, big deal... The only problem is, I am a she. I immediately burst out laughing and showed my husband. He got a good chuckle out of it. I was further amused to see that my insurance company paid for it. I called my Doctor's billing office and the clerk laughed, apologized, but kept chuckling as she apologized, and said she would fix this right away.

If you click on the image it will expand in a new window so you can see the whole statement. Here are some interesting things I have learned from analyzing it:
  • A vasectomy is cheap! only $500 bucks! wow...
  • A vasectomy happens at the doctor's office, it is not a hospital procedure. Never knew that, we've come a long ways...I thought for sure it would at least be outpatient surgery
  • Per the fine details that $500 goes a long ways including ensuring it worked (note the postoperative semen exam)
  • My insurance company is very dumb, I have been on their plan for years, getting a birth control shot every 10 weeks for like, well forever, you would think someone would have questioned the mismatch.
  • My doctor's office is just about as dumb, but I will give them a break because they just bought a new patient software database this year and I think they accidentally entered me as a male...oopsie
  • Another observation...what on earth is this payment for that I made of $15 on 7/30/05. I don't recall going to see them in June/July and where is the corresponding office visit? So now I have a credit for something I know nothing about
  • What is this crazy amount the insurance paid? $542.59 is 99% of the total. I am on a $15 co-pay for office visits or 90/10 for other stuff.
It's little things like this that we can use to amuse ourselves. Like a free joke or riddle, but its not made up...since it really happened. Just like printing out an Email joke that tickled your funny bone, I have been carrying around this silly statement, showing it to folks I think will be amused by it. So far everyone has had a good laugh.
